My plan is to install the old PC in the room with roof access, run the USB cable & dongle up to the top of a ventilation shaft, then attach the coax and antenna. Took it up to the roof at work, fired up the laptop with RTL1090 connected to PlanePlotter, and sure enough, 5 aircraft appeared within a few seconds. Placed it on a 3ft piece of ABS pipe, and attached 10m of RG58 (or 59 - the 50Ohm one). I had cut eight radials, but was having a seriously hard time soldering them on. I built the quarter-wave based on the SO-239 although I only have 4 radials, not the 8 as pictured. The RTL-SDR arrived a couple of days ago, and it seems to be performing fairly well.
What software are you using on your receiving computer? Can you create simultaneous feeds to multiple web servers (Flightradar24, PlaneFinder etc)? What kind of setups do you have? What antenna / coax do you use?Īnyone else in Edmonton running such a setup? Can you MLAT with these devices for the Mode C aircraft which are much more prevalent than the Mode S? Can the RTLSDR handle both Mode S & Mode C simultaneously?

Should I run Windows or Ubuntu? The goal is to provide a feed to Plane Plotter - but I'd want to view PP from another computer, not the one with the USB receiver. Doh!Īs for the computers, what do you suggest? I can obtain an old PC, possibly an old laptop (think Athlon 3300XP or Intel Core 2). I found some instructions for making that one, but now can't find them. I'd want it to be mounted on the roof somehow. I'd like to make a simple ground plane antenna for it, like the one in the picture ( ). Got lots of questions, so open to suggestions from anyone who has done this kind of thing. Although I'd like to have some general fun with it (can be used for TRBO with DMRDecode can't it?) the main reason I got it is to create a feed for Plane Plotter. Just ordered an RTLSDR with the R820T tuner.
